If you are a peanut butter ice cream novice this would be a great way to introduce you to the flavor.
Editor's note: Throughout the summer, The Republican's Elizabeth Roman is writing "Scoopful of Ice Cream," a blog reviewing ice cream treats. This is the first of her articles. The reviews originate in print Thursdays in El Pueblo Latino, and are also published online in Spanish on MassLive.com.
When I was a kid my favorite sound was the little jingle blaring from the dilapidated ice cream truck that used to roll down my street every day during the summer. I would wait in anticipation, my sweaty little hands holding four quarters, for a vanilla soft serve cone with rainbow sprinkles.
Ice cream has always been the best way for me to satisfy my need for sugar. While I started out as a timid taster limiting my selection to vanilla or chocolate ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, I’ve since developed a taste for ice cream, sorbet and occasionally frozen yogurt bursting with mix-ins from the traditional chocolate chips and peanut butter cups to chocolate covered potato chips, peanut brittle, cake pieces and more. A few months ago I stumbled upon an ice cream blog called "On Second Scoop," and my love of ice cream reviews was born.
The writer’s description of classic as well as newly released ice cream flavors had me running to the supermarket to purchase all sorts of crazy ice cream varieties from raspberry sorbet to birthday cake-flavored frozen delights.
So, in honor of national ice cream month, which is almost over, and my overall love of frozen treats, I’ve decided to write an ice cream blog for the summer documenting my journey through the freezer isle and a few ice cream shops as well.
Since the only thing I love more than ice cream is chocolate and peanut butter I decided to start with a treat I’ve been eyeing since last year, but was too cheap to buy. Good Humor’s Reese’s Ice Cream Cup bars were introduced last year, ringing in at $4.19 for just six treats. I’m unwilling to pay full price for grocery store ice cream, so when I saw this on sale for $3.33 at Big Y I finally picked up a box and, oh, what I’ve been missing.
The treat is a bit bigger than a hockey puck and is covered in a nice milk chocolate similar to that of a Klondike bar shell. The chocolate is perfectly tasty, but it's what’s inside that really won me over.
If you are a peanut butter ice cream novice this would be a great way to introduce you to the flavor. The ice cream in this treat is smooth and creamy but with some added grit from actual bits of Reese’s peanut butter mixed in.
I am a huge fan of Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and this treat honestly tastes like a frozen version of the delectable little cups.
Now this is not a treat for the health conscious, coming in at 280 calories per serving with 19 grams of fat. However, as an occasional indulgence, it’s a perfect frozen dessert. I give it five scoops (out of five).
