During Fright Fest, chills are added to thrills at Six Flags New England in Agawam.

Scaredy cats take notice.

Six Flags New England officials are delivering on their promise to visitors to unearth an eerier than ever Snicker’s Fright Fest at the Agawam theme park, where ghosts, goblins, ghouls, zombies and the most terrifying of creatures making their weekend home.

The Agawam amusement park is open Friday, 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 10 pm..; and Sunday, noon to 9 p.m. Tickets are $51.99 and $41.99 for those under 54 inches tall, though significant online discounts can be obtained at www.sixflags.com/newengland

While there will be hauntings by day and by night, the fear factor gets turned up big time when the darkness arrives and the haunted houses become more haunted, roaming zombies become even scarier, and fun rides turn horrifying for the Halloween season.

“We’ve added a new haunt zone to the park this year called Demon District where visitors will find demons who have taken over an old warehouse district. We’ve even themed the teacup ride calling it Terror Twist, where some clown misfits have taken charge,” said Peter Shannon, entertainment manager at Six Flags New England.

“As part of the scary new district, we’ve added a new show called Creepshow Freakshow, which I can tell you isn’t for the faint of heart. The show features actual sideshow performers from New York and Philadelphia who walk on beds of nails, swallow swords and eat fire, walk on glass, and do other outlandish things,” he added.

Thrill-seekers will also find returning popular favorites Midnight Mansion, Wicked Woods and Slayer’s Lair – a 1,000-foot path that leads curious wanderers deep in the heart of a demon-ridden Southern bayou. There is an additional admission fee to visit each of these three fear-filled favorites.

Among the many frightfully-fun free shows such as Haunting Illusions with illusionist David Garrity and Mayhem Mission: Ghoulish Game Show, which is more family friendly, will be the new Hypnosterics Beware! starring Connecticut master hypnotist Jim Spinnato. His spooky mind-controlling show is strictly for the brave of heart who won’t mind being picked from the audience to get up on stage and “lose their mind,” noted Shannon.

For younger visitors who aren’t so brave, they can collect candy from less-threatening characters along the safe roads of Trick-or-Treat Trail, sponsored by Big Y. There is a $1 donation to walk the candy-filled trail with all proceeds raised benefitting Six Flags Friends, which supports non-profit organizations throughout New England.

Shannon said for the first time ever, those younger children ready for a little scare can stop by Midnight Mansion in the light of day which offers “less fright and more light.” For the reduced admission price of $5 per person, young guests and their families will be guided through the spooky daytime tour of the haunted mansion by one of its friendlier inhabitants.

“And, there’s still a couple of surprising scares along the way, but nothing too much,” said Shannon.

The park’s entertainment director noted they begin preparing for the Halloween season’s Fright Fest in July “auditioning for the shows and interviewing and auditioning every single one of our zombies and monsters” through Labor Day.

“We then put them through three weeks of training in our Ghoul School. All of our monster have a great time and many come back each year just to work for the six weekends of Fright Fest, and they have a blast doing it,” said Shannon.
