Is silence golden? The answer will be revealed tonight when the winners of the 69th annual Golden Globe awards are revealed.

“The Artist” leads the pack with six nominations, among them best comedy or musical, as well as nods for its French star Jean Dujardin and director Michel Hazanavicius.

Hazanavicius’s black and white salute to the silent film era has already received trophies from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, Boston Society of Film Critics, and New York Online.

The awards ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hills Hilton on NBC beginning at 8 p.m. Sharp-tongued comic Ricky Gervais returns as host.

George Clooney is up for three awards. He has been nominated for best actor in a drama for “The Descendants,” and for writing the screenplay and directing “The Ides of March.”

“The Artists,” “The Descendants” and “The Ides of March” are all considered likely contenders for Academy Award nominations. Those nominations will be revealed on Jan. 24.

For years, the Golden Globes were seen as a harbinger of the Oscars, though in recent years the two have differed. For example, last year the Golden Globes chose “The Social Network” as best picture, while the Oscar went to “The King’s Speech.”

The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association annually for best in film and television.

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman – who won the supporting-actor Oscar for “Million Dollar Baby” and a best-actor Globe for “Driving Miss Daisy” – will receive the group’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

The 69th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.
