It is with great sadness that I write today that the Black Moon Lounge in Belchertown will go dark at the end of December.

According to a notice on the club's website, the Black Moon will close its doors at the end of the year unless a serious offer is made to buy the business.

As one of the "newer" clubs to open in our area in the past few years (along with such places as The Rendezvous in Turners Falls) the Black Moon had quite a great run over the past four years.

As is often the with clubs, perhaps it was the wonderful dedication to bringing an eclectic mix of music to its stage that may have helped lead to its demise. But I congratulate those involved in doing so. The club featured everything from jazz to folk to rock to country there and almost all the performers were stellar. Acts such as The Lonesome Brothers, Trailer Park, then Joe Belmont Jazz Trio, and Glenwood Mills all graced the clubs stage at one time or another. The club also featured comedy nights as well as free pizza on Thursdays.

It probably didn't help that the Black Moon was located pretty far out on Route 202 in Belchertown and that its outer edifice was kind of unassuming. But it's always sad when the area loses a club that really tried to bring the best of the arts through its doors.

So while we can still hold out hope that a new owner comes and takes the reins, for now I'll just say goodbye and wish the current owners well on any new endeavors. It's not easy running a club in these economic times, especially one that doesn't rely on gimmicks, but actually tries to employ talented performers and provide a good setting for their artistry.
