East Longmeadow’s Peter Gray has moved on in the competition to be the Next Great Baker on TLC, showing off his vibrant personality and love for cake decorating.

The show premiered last night at 9pm, featuring 13 contestants. Gray, at 21-years-old, is the youngest contestant.

Last night’s competition consisted of one Baker’s Challenge, in which the contestants had to make a dessert of their choice and use public transportation to hand-deliver their desserts to judge and host Buddy, also of the show Cake Boss.

Gray was the last contestant to reach Buddy, so he was automatically disqualified from that challenge and not allowed to have his dessert displayed or tasted by Buddy.

Next came the Elimination Challenge, in which the contestants had to work in teams of three to design, decorate and execute a Mexican fiesta-style groom’s cake for the wedding of celebrity Mario Lopez and fiancé Courtney Mazza.

Gray’s cake was in the top two, but didn’t win the challenge. However, his team was safe from elimination.

The team created a cake in the shape of a tree, with a piñata hanging from the tree. The team also added Mexican-inspired details.

Prizes for winning Next Great Baker include $100,000, a feature in Redbook magazine, and the change to work at Carlo’s Bakery with Buddy of the popular show Cake Boss.

Gray will be on next week’s episode of Next Great Baker, airing Mondays at 9pm.
