In what has become a holiday tradition at Amherst Cinema, the classic “It’s A Wonderful Life” will be shown in matinee screenings at the cinema on December 21, 22 and 23, at 2 p.m. each day. Tickets are regular admission and are available at the Amherst Cinema box office or online at www.amherstcinema.org

James Stewart stars as a small-town nobody, on the brink of suicide, who believes his life is worthless. Guardian angel Henry Travers shows him how wrong he is by letting Stewart see what would have happened had he never been born.

This is director Frank Capra’s classic bittersweet comedy/drama about George Bailey (Stewart), the eternally-in-debt guiding force of a bank in a typical American small town. It’s Christmas Eve, 1946, and George, who has long considered himself a failure, faces financial ruin and arrest. As the film opens, two celestial voices discuss Bailey’s dilemma and decide to send down eternally bumbling angel Clarence Oddbody (Henry Travers), who after 200 years has yet to earn his wings.

“The sappy / happy ending makes me cry every time,” said Carol Johnson, Executive Director of Amherst Cinema. “And like many people, I must have seen the film 15 times!”
