The performance will reportedly cap the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden
Stranger things have happened.
Reports swirl that the surviving members of Nirvana will perform together on stage tonight at the 12-12-12 Concert for the first time since the suicide of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994.
Stranger yet, former Beatle Paul McCartney will fill in for Cobain.
The 70-year-old rock legend has been working in the recording studio with Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic, according to The Sun. The pair were founding members of Nirvana along with Cobain.
McCartney was quoted as saying he was asked by Grohl to jam with some mates. “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Britain's The Guardian confirmed McCartney will join Grohl and Novoselic on stage at Madison Square Garden to play a new song after secretly working with the pair. Pat Smear, the punk guitarist who joined Nirvana in their final year, is also rumored to be involved in the performance.
A publicist with Nasty Little Man, which represents both McCartney and Grohl, told SPIN "we can neither confirm nor deny" the reports.
Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear reunited to record a tribute to Cobain, "I Should Have Known," on the Foo Fighters' last album, 2011's "Wasting Light."
Other performers at tonight's benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy include: Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney.
Proceeds will be distributed to storm victims in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut through the Robin Hood Foundation. Organizers have already raised $30 million.
