She will represent Rhode Island in the Miss United States pageant in Washington in July.
Cara Lustig, a senior airman assigned to the 439th Communications Squadron at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, has been tapped to serve as Miss Rhode Island-United States 2013.
The Narragansett, R.I., native will represent Rhode Island in the Miss United States pageant, which will be held in Washington, D.C. in July.
Lustig had competed in the Miss Massachusetts USA pageant in Lowell last month, but did not advance.
She made inquiries with the Miss Rhode Island-United State pageant, which was interested in her participation.
"The director said the candidate from Rhode Island had moved," Lustig said. "Based on my experience he thought I was a perfect fit for the title."
"I was blown away," she added. "Being in the Miss Massachusetts pageant gave me a lot of experience. I'm so blessed. Everything fell into place."
Assigned to the communications wing at Westover, Lustig handles a variety of tasks such as record management and updating the base website.The 25-year-old reservist graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
She is now working as a military enrollment advisor with the University of Phoenix, where she assists students who are also in the military prepare for classes, a career and deal with related issues.
She is also studying full-time for her master’s degree in business administration and volunteers as a mentor for second-graders in Dorchester.
