Members of the Springfield Symphony Chorus will join him for the May 1 talk.
LONGMEADOW -- Kevin Rhodes, music director and conductor of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, has partnered with Bay Path College to offer a free, three-part lecture series focusing on two popular classical musicians, the opera, and two defining works of classical music. The series is related to works being performed this season by the symphony.
All events begin at 7 p.m. in Mills Theatre in Carr Hall.
Rhodes kicks-off the series with “The Young & The Brilliant,” an interactive discussion about Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on Jan. 31. The young violinst Caroline Goulding will join him on the program. Goulding will perform works with the symphony by both classical perfomers on Feb. 2 at Springfield Symphony Hall.
“It’s Opera!, ” the next lecture on March 6, will focus on the popularity of opera across the globe. Rhodes' March 9 presentation with the symphony at Symphony Hall is “Passion, Love, Murder, and Mayhem – It’s Opera."
In the final talk on May 1, “Making a Death Mass Fun,” Rhodes will be joined on stage by members of the Springfield Symphony Chorus and director Nikki Stoia, as he explores Mozart’s final work, The Requiem Mass in D minor, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. The symphony will perform both in its May 4 performance at Symphony Hall.
