The Christmas-hating Grinch is coming back to theaters!

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are readying a 3-D animated remake of Springfield native's Theodor Geisel's beloved Dr. Seuss story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!"

Peter Candeland ("Gorillaz: Phase One") is set to direct, with Illumination CEO Christopher Meledandri producing. Meledandri has a history with Seuss adaptations, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was the executive produced Fox's 2008 animated version of "Horton Hears a Who!," which led to him making 2012's "The Lorax" at Universal.

Dr. Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, will serve as executive producer of the "Grinch" remake.

Written in 1957, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was adapted in 1966 into a beloved half-hour TV animated special by Theodor Geisel and Chuck Jones for CBS.

Universal made a live-action film version in 2000 starring Jim Carrey. It raked in $345 million worldwide at the box office, making it the second highest-grossing holiday film of all time after "Home Alone."

Geisel, born in Springfield on March 2, 1904, died in 1991.

The Springfield Museums honored the author with the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Quadrangle in 2002. Sculptor Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, who is also Geisel's step-daughter, created bronze sculptures of Geisel and his most beloved characters.
