Blue Bunny's 24 Karat Carrot Cake ice cream combines great ice cream with awful mix-ins.

I love cake just about as much as I love ice cream. For awhile I've been seeing Blue Bunny's Chef Duff ice cream line inspired by the Charm City Cakes owner.

While I love both desserts I generally don't combine ice cream and cake since soggy cake is not my favorite thing. However, I absolutely love carrot cake and couldn't resist purchasing this pint of 24 Karat Carrot Cake at Big Y.

As soon as I removed the lid I was hit with a sweet cream cheese frosting smell. Great start.

Unfortunately there were some disappointments here. There are several elements to this treat and they don't all work well.

The ice cream is a combination of caramel colored carrot cake ice cream combined with a sweet cream cheese frosting ice cream and chunks of carrot cake mixed in.

The carrot cake ice cream is fantastic. It tastes just like the cake version, sweet and spicy and awesome.

The cream cheese frosting ice cream is OK. It's a very sweet, but has a weird aftertaste.

The major problem here are the carrot cake pieces. They are a complete disaster. The consistency is the major problem here. The cake bits don't taste like cake at all, they taste like hard chunks of cookie dough. Granted it's hard to keep cake pieces moist and soft in a frozen dessert, but even after a bit of melting the cake bits remained hard as rock. Very disappointing.

I still give it three scoops because the ice cream itself is pretty tasty. The issue here is the cake bits, without them this would be a perfectly respectable treat.
