Blue Bunny makes great ice cream, but no so great mix-ins including the chocolate cake pieces in this Triple Chocolate Cake ice cream.
Last week I reviewed Blue Bunny's 24 Karat Carrot Cake ice cream and I was less than impressed. However, they were buy one get one free at Big Y so I also purchased the brand's Triple Chocolate Cake offering.
I am a chocolate fanatic and since this treat is basically chocolate mixed with chocolate and more chocolate I couldn't imagine it going wrong. I was mistaken.
The chocolate ice cream in this treat is very good, and has a creamy texture. The ice cream base is sweet, but not too sweet and works really well on it's own.
Then we come to the mix-ins and this is where the problems begin.
The ribbon of chocolate frosting is not a ribbon at all, but more like sporadic chunks of chocolate frosting that lack any real flavor. The few times I did taste this illusive ribbon I was disappointed.

Now we get to the cake. Last week I had major issues with what they called carrot cake pieces that were more like cookie dough. Fortunately the texture of the cake is not a problem here. Blue Bunny does not skimp on the pieces, it seemed like I had one in every bite. They were soft and resembled real cake, but they didn't really taste like chocolate cake. To me the cake bits tasted more like pound cake then a true chocolate cake.
What I've come to realize is that Blue Bunny makes a decent ice cream, but its mix-ins are disappointing.
I give this two scoops because the ice cream was pretty good, but the rest of it was blah.
