A year–or three–ago (time flies when you're having fun, and today's column is about comedy) I wrote about an open mic comedy night on Wednesdays at Bishop's Lounge in Northampton.
The good news is that the scene is still going on each Wednesday there. The better news is is that it's been so popular that they've added a Thursday open comedy mic as well.
The fun runs between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. each night, with sign up starting at 7 p.m. Each act is given three to five minutes to squeeze some yuks out of the decent-sized crowd that shows up most weeks. both nights are usually hosted by Nick Caron, but for the next few weeks, the Wednesday slots will have guest hosts and the nights will serve as fundraisers for fellow comic Aaron LaRoche, who was injured in a car accident.
According to comic Gabrielle Lisa, who hosted last week, as many as 25 comics perform short sets each night, so it's a fast-paced, ever-changing show.
"I only did a one-minute set warm-up because there were so many people signed up," she said.
Lisa also said that the hosts usually supply some sort of mystery prize for the comic they deem deserving. These can range from pleasant (like buying the comic a drink) to gag gifts (like a broken phone).
Bishop's Lounge is on the third floor of 41 Strong Ave.

Pin2's Billiards now has a DJ every Friday and Saturday night, as well as a new specialty food and summer drink menu. Pin2's is at 885 Riverdale St. in West Springfield.
You have to love Donovan's Irish Pub's latest ad, announcing the opening of its outdoor patio. Seeing as the venue is located in the Eastfield Mall, there isn't a lot of scenery, so the ad honestly exhorts: "Enjoy a spectacular view of our parking lot!" Funny stuff. You can find the mall, and the pub at 1655 Boston Road in Springfield.
American Legion Post 266 in Granby will feature West Street Station on May 31. The club also now holds an open mic every Thursday, live music on Fridays, and an open mic every Saturday. The legion is at 74 Pleasant St.
Ariel Pink will play the Clubroom at Pearl Street Nightclub on June 8. Opening the show will be Purple Pilgrims. The club is at 10 Pearl St. in Northampton.
Club Meadows now features Springfield College's Luke Gabordi playing Thursdays. Club Meadows is at 621 North Main St. in East Longmeadow.
Bluesman and slide guitarist Mark Nomad will play City Sports Grille in Northampton on June 1. The club is at 525 Pleasant St.
