Shelburne Falls is becoming Carlinville, Indiana, for the next few weeks as Hollywood crews begin filming "The Judge" starring Robert Downey Jr.

Workers were turning a Greenfield Co-operative Bank branch on Bridge Street into Carlinville Savings & Loan on Thursday. Fire hydrants got a new coat of paint. And banners identifying the town as Carlinville and celebrating the fictional town's 170th anniversary were hung from lamp posts.

In "The Judge," Downey will star as a successful lawyer who returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral only to discover that his estranged father (Robert Duvall), the town's judge, is suspected of murder. The comedy-drama also stars Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"), as well as Vincent D'Onofrio ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") and Billy Bob Thornton ("Sling Blade").

Aerial photography will commence on Friday. Additional shooting along Bridge Street will take place next week.

When filming wraps in Shelburne Falls and Sunderland, the production will move on to Worcester and Boston.

"The Judge" is a co-production between the star's Team Downey and director David Dobkin's Big Kid Pictures. It will be released by Warner Bros.
