The Board of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has hired Audrey Szychukski as the new executive director of the SSO.

Szychukski, who is currently the executive director of the Erie (Penn.) Philharmonic, replaces Michael Jonnes, who retired in December.

A cellist and graduate of Mansfield University and Drexel University, Szychulski, 33, joined the Erie Philharmonic in August 2010. She previously worked with orchestras in Norwalk, Conn., and Corning, N.Y.

She has been honored for her work in the arts in Pennsylvania and was named one of Erie's 30 Most Extraordinary Women by the Erie Times News.

"From our first round of resume screening, and through every subsequent step of interviewing, reference gathering, and especially after spending time with her, Audrey has consistently stood out as our most promising candidate for this critical position. The Executive Board and I feel that we have found the right person to help us lead the SSO through our next period of success," SSO President Kristina Drzal Houghton said.

Szychulski's salary was not revealed. Jonnes, who held the post for 14 years, earned $59,836 in 2011.

Szychulski will begin her duties with the SSO on Aug. 1.

Reached in Erie, Szychulski said she was drawn to the mix of talented musicans, maestro and governing board at the SSO.

She said she will work toward expanding the SSO and increasing collaborative efforts in the community.

Among her first tasks will be replacing two top executives. Development Director Linda Cardillo Platzer and Marketing Director Susan Bennett announced their departures in recent weeks.

Szychulski will take the reins as the SSO prepares to enter its 70th season.

"I could not be more excited to be welcoming Audrey to the SSO family! She will bring an energetic blend of skill, enthusiasm and musical knowledge to the SSO. Trained as both an arts administrator and as a musician, I am really looking forward to the synergy that Audrey and I will develop as the Springfield Symphony begins it's 70th anniversary season and we guide the orchestra into it's eighth decade."
