Looking for something new and exciting to try? On July 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. come take part in Springfield’s first Dragon Boat Races on the Connecticut River. Dragon Boat Racing is great fun for anyone, young or old. This local event will attract primarily co-ed teams from corporations, public service groups, small businesses, high schools, colleges and universities, as well as friends who join forces and experience the enjoyment of the sport! Form your own team and you’re bound to create memories you will never forget. Here are 5 Great reasons to join up…

1. Splash your paddles to keep those evil spirits away as you travel down the Springfield riverfront. According to the Springfield Dragon Boat website, more than 2,500 years ago, a man named Qu Yuan was exiled from Ancient China, the land that he loved, and in turn committed suicide in the Miluo River in a final form of protest. During an attempt to save him, the locals took to the river in their fishing boats, splashing their paddles to keep the water demons and evil spirits away. Reconnect with history as you take part in this exciting experience.

2. There’s never been something like this happening at the Riverfront! So come join your community and be a part of an unforgettable experience as Springfield hosts its first ever Dragon Boat Races from High Five Dragon Boat, LLC all the way from Tampa, FL.

3. Are you a survivor of breast cancer? We commend you for everything you’ve endured during a difficult journey. Now, take in an experience with other survivors just like you on a fun and exciting journey down the river. Each team that consists of all Breast Cancer Survivors will experience Springfield’s Dragon Boat Races at a discounted price.

4. Organize a corporate team building exercise! According to Mark Downing, the Director of Corporate Safety at TECO Energy, “It’s better than any video, professional speaker, or novelty out there.” It is important to be able to work together and learn about one another in order to accomplish any assignment thrown your way without “clinking paddles;” a term that has become a permanent part of TECO Energy’s vocabulary which means being a little “out of sync,” in the workplace. So what are you waiting for? Gather a group of 20 co-workers and accomplish the task of rowing a dragon boat!

5. Don’t feel like paddling? You’re in luck! Each boat has a spot for a drummer. The drummer has one of the most important roles during the entire race. Each beat on the drum is supposed to be in unison with the stroke of the paddlers, motivating their team to reach the finish line.
