Season 14 of The Biggest Loser has officially begun. Let's start by stating the obvious -- Allison Sweeny looks REALLY good. Wow!

This season they are "Challenging America" to help stop childhood obesity. In addition to the usual contestants this year there are three "Ambassadors for Change." Sixteen-year-old Sunny who is on Jillian's white team, thirteen-year-old Lindsay who is rocking red on Dolvett's team, and the absolutely adorable thirteen-year-old Noah - who prefers to go by Bingo - is getting healthy with Bob's blue team.

Bob shared a scary stat, "Because of childhood obesity, for the first time our children will not outlive our parents".

We first meet the contestants when the show picks 15 people from the audience (all of whom are contenders to be on the show). Here is this year’s line-up:

White Team - Jillian (name/age/starting weight):
Nathan/25 /359 lbs
Pam/43/237 lbs
Danni/25/258 lbs
TC/ 20/ 376 lbs
Nikki /26 /280 lbs

Blue Team - Bob (name/age/starting weight):
Michael /34 /444 lbs
David /51 / 307 lbs
Jeff /24 / 388 lbs
Alex /24 /240 lbs
Gina/47 /245 lbs

Red Team - Dolvett (name/age/starting weight):
Lisa /36 / 246 lbs
Jackson /21 / 328 lbs
Joe /43 /364 lbs
Cate/27 /237 lbs
Francelina /25/ 267 lbs

And then it was off to the gym and sponsored by Planet Fitness - man I can already tell I am going to get tired of seeing purple and yellow. It took about eight seconds for the Jillian we all love to return. Her loving nature is still as witty as ever as she shouted, "Get your ass on the treadmill." It's always fun to see who will be the first man down. This year it was Nathan. Off the treadmill he flew. Closely followed by Jackson, who, although not the first to "toss his cookies," (pardon the sweet expression) became known as the "Throw Up King" by trainer Dolvett. There was so much vomiting going on that they actually have buckets all around the machines. ICK!!!

Great quotes from the show:

  • When someone says I can’t breathe: "You wanna breathe, then you'll do what I tell you to and one day you'll be able to". - Jillian
  • "Breathe in the positive and breathe out the fear" - Pam
  • "If you’re not willing to get angry, get sad, get scared, get uncomfortable - for change to occur - then your not ready" - Jillian
  • "I'm on a me mission". - Lisa

They had the weekly challenge for a five pound advantage at the weigh in. The kids played along with their teams too. The white team won.

The last chance workout was brutal as always, but actually pushed one person too far. Nikki decided to leave The Ranch. Leaving her white team with only four players. I have to say this REALLY pissed me off. There are thousands of people who want to be on the show and she gets chosen and then quits. Not cool.

SPOILER ALERT
And then it's time for the dreaded weigh-in. This time there would be a red line and the person with lowest percentage on the losing team would be going home.

The White Team went first (and has a 5 lb. advantage):
Nathan -20
Pam -10
Danni -19
TC -15
Total team percentage = 5.61%

Red Team is next and they need 80 lbs to beat white:
Lisa -16
Jackson -22
Joe -26
Cate -12
Francelina -19
With
Total team percentage = 6.59%
And with enough pounds, white is still in danger.

Up next Blue Team needs to have lost more than 91 lbs:
Michael -21
David -20
Jeff -29
Alex -9
Gina -15
And with a slim margin they had enough to keep white on the bottom.

Without a vote the person who lost the least (by percentage) was headed home and that was TC. And with that Jillian and the White Team are down to three.

And we don't have to wait long for another episode because The Biggest Loser is on again tonight.

I wanted to take a minute and discuss the issue of childhood obesity. I was an overweight kid. I am not the person who places blame for things, but I will say that I never developed very good eating habits as a kid, in part because my Mom didn’t cook and we ate out A LOT.

Most meals I ate as a child did not include a vegetable, unless you consider French fries or a pickle a vegetable and most came with a dessert. I know as an adult I had difficulty learning how to eat a meal without obsessing through it about what sweet sensation I would have soon. Again, I am not blaming, but I do think as parents more can be done to show children the importance of eating healthy and exercising.

I can remember as a waitress at Friendly's when a parent would come in with a clearly obese child and allow them to order off the adult menu because "they are not filled with the kids menu." Taking action to limit portion sizes, stressing trying new vegetables, and encouraging activity is vital to kids. I am not saying dessert is bad or never to take your child for a Happy Meal, but I believe these should be treats and not expected.

I am not a parent yet, but as a former obese child and now as a morbidly obese adult I ask you to please consider this.
