Clubs are gearing up for Valentine's Day.
DJ Ronnie Kwon is throwing a 1980s-style party for both couples and singles at Hinge in Northampton on Feb. 14. What makes this event different is that the event will be held as high-school prom, just like in the 1980s hit movie "Pretty In Pink", complete with the music fashion from that decade. This means, Kwon said, that attendees are expected to dress accordingly. On other words, dress as of you are going to a prom in the 1980s.
The fun will start at 10 p.m. and tickets are $10 and can only be purchased in advance. There will be no tickets sold at the door. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/312387
You must be 21 years old or over to attend and the promoter retains right to refuse admittance or refund reservation fees at the door based upon inadequate dress or intoxicated/rude behavior. Hinge is located at 48 Main St.
It's not too late to get Valentine's Day events in Club Scout. Drop me a note at raconteurgeo@gmail.com
Scouting report
I love when you can have a few drinks and experience some good literature together. Such will be the case when City Arts+ present "Unbuttoned, An Evening of Spoken Word" on Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m. at Luthier’s Co-Op in Easthampton.
The evening will feature writers Christy Crutchfield and Mel Bosworth. The event will begin with six open-mic slots for five-minute long readings. Open-mic participants will be selected on a first-come, first served basis, with sign-ups sheet starting at 6:45 p.m. Crutchfield holds an MFA from the UMass Amherst Program for Poets and Writers. Her work has appeared in Mississippi Review, the Good Men Project, Salt Hill Journal, and others. She was a finalist for the American Short Fiction short story contest and received the Daniel and Merrily Glosband Award for Poetry, awarded by Keith Waldrop. Bosworth is the two-time Pushcart nominated author of the fiction chapbook "When the Cats Razzed the Chickens," the novella "Grease Stains, Kismet, and Maternal Wisdom," the novel "Freight"and the poetry chapbook "Every Laundromat in the World."
If you like reggae, the area's best band in that genre, The Equalites, will be at City Sports Grille on Feb. 9. The venue is a great spot to catch the band because it has a huge dance floor, which is de rigeur for reggae shows.
City Sports Grille is at 525 Pleasant St. in Northampton (inside Spare Time Bowling).
If you like to mix good will with good music, check out the show at Maximum Capacity on Feb. 8. The Fear Nuttin Band and Strange Machines will team up for a concert to benefit the Strangers Helping Strangers food drive. Strangers Helping Strangers is a non-profit organization
organizes and hosts food drives at concerts and festivals then delivers the donations to the local food banks nearest the venue at which they were collected. There will be no cover for the show but instead, bring donations of non-perishable food items, toiletry, feminine or personal hygiene, or baby products to help those in need. Maximum Capacity is at 116 School St. in Chicopee.
